4. Metal hardware and finish — the corrosion question. D-rings, swivel hooks, tri-glides and zipper pull tips are usually zinc alloy or steel with an electroplated finish. The plating is what you are actually buying. Nickel and gunmetal finishes hold up well; cheap plating on untreated base metal will pit and bloom within one monsoon, and it does so visibly, on the outside of a bag carrying your logo.
